🎚️ Register & Discourse

The official B2 standard defines the step up from B1 as choosing the right way to say something, not just a correct one. This is that skill.

🎯 What the standard actually says

Given several syntactically valid ways to express the same information, the B2 candidate must choose the one that fits the text type and style — spoken versus written, official versus unofficial, private versus administrative versus media.

That single sentence is the whole difference between B1 and B2. At B1 you need a correct sentence. At B2 you need the appropriate one — and a text in the wrong register loses marks even when every word is right.

🪜 The same idea, five ways

"Could you repeat that?" across the register ladder. Nothing here is wrong; each belongs somewhere different.

urzędowy · official
Uprzejmie proszę o powtórzenie.
formalny · formal
Czy mógłby Pan powtórzyć?
neutralny · neutral
Proszę powtórzyć.
nieformalny · informal
Możesz to powtórzyć?
potoczny · colloquial
Co? Powtórz.
Czy mógłby Pan powtórzyć? formal
chi MOOG-bi pahn pof-TOO-zhich?
Could you repeat that? — conditional mógłby + Pan does the politeness work
Możesz to powtórzyć? informal
MOH-zhesh toh pof-TOO-zhich?
Can you repeat that? — second person singular, no conditional
Three levers raise the register, and you can pull them independently:
  1. Pan/Pani instead of ty — and with it third-person verb agreement
  2. The conditional — mógłby, chciałbym, czy mógłbym prosić
  3. Nominalisation — a verbal noun instead of a verb: o powtórzenie rather than powtórzyć

🗣️ Managing a conversation

The functional catalogue names discourse management explicitly: opening, joining, referring back to a previous speaker, controlling the exchange and closing. These cannot be drilled as vocabulary — they only exist inside an exchange, which is why the oral exam tests them.

Taking a turn

Chciałbym coś dodać.
HCHAW-bim tsohsh DOH-dahch.
I'd like to add something. — a woman says chciałabym
Przepraszam, że przerywam.
psheh-PRAH-shahm, zheh psheh-RI-vahm.
Sorry to interrupt. — the standard way in, formal or not

Referring back — the named requirement

Wracając do tego, co Pan powiedział…
vrah-TSAH-yonts doh TEH-goh, tsoh pahn poh-VYEH-dzhahw
Coming back to what you said… — an adverbial participle doing real conversational work
Zgadzam się z przedmówcą.
ZGAH-dzahm sheh s pshed-MOOV-tsohm.
I agree with the previous speaker. — zgadzać się z + instrumental

Disagreeing without being rude

Nie do końca się z tym zgadzam.
nyeh doh KOYN-tsah sheh s tim ZGAH-dzahm.
I don't entirely agree with that. — hedged, which is what makes it usable in an exam
Z całym szacunkiem, ale to nieprawda.
s TSAH-wim shah-TSOON-kyem, AH-leh toh nyeh-PRAHV-dah.
With respect, that's not true. — firm; use when you mean it

Closing

Na zakończenie chciałbym podkreślić jedno.
nah zah-koyn-CHEH-nyeh HCHAW-bim pod-KRESH-leech YED-noh.
In closing I'd like to stress one thing. — formal
Krótko mówiąc, to się nie opłaca.
KROOT-koh MOO-vyonts, toh sheh nyeh oh-PWAH-tsah.
In short, it's not worth it. — neutral to informal

🌗 Certainty, doubt and supposition

The functional catalogue lists modal functions separately: certainty and uncertainty, possibility and impossibility, supposition, necessity. Committing too hard is as much a register error as hedging everything.

StrengthPolishEnglish
certainJestem pewien/pewna, że…I'm certain that…

likelyPrawdopodobnie… · Pewnie…Probably…
hedgedWydaje mi się, że… · Chyba…It seems to me…
possibleMożliwe, że… · Być może…It's possible that…
doubtfulWątpię, żeby…I doubt that… (+ żeby + -ł form)
necessityTrzeba… · Należy… · Muszę…One must / I must
Jestem pewien, że to zadziała.
YES-tem PEH-vyen, zheh toh zah-DZHAH-wah.
I'm certain it will work. — a woman says pewna
Prawdopodobnie masz rację.
prahv-doh-poh-DOB-nyeh mahsh RAH-tsyeh.
You're probably right.
Wydaje mi się, że tak.
vi-DAH-yeh mee sheh, zheh tahk.
It seems to me that it is. — wydawać się + dative
Możliwe, że się mylę.
mozh-LEE-veh, zheh sheh MI-leh.
It's possible I'm wrong. — conceding without collapsing
Gdybym miał więcej czasu, zrobiłbym to inaczej.
GDI-bim myahw VYEN-tsey CHAH-soo, zroh-BEEW-bim toh ee-NAH-chey.
If I had more time, I'd do it differently. — gdyby + -ł in both halves
Conditional periods take the -ł form on both sides. Gdybym miał…, zrobiłbym… — never ✗ gdybym mam. And both forms agree with the speaker's gender, so a woman writes Gdybym miała…, zrobiłabym….

🔁 Mediation — the register-shift task

The standard requires tłumaczenie wewnątrzjęzykowe: taking content and re-expressing it in a different register. This is the most direct possible test of everything above, and it appears as a writing task.

Informal originalOfficial version
Cześć! Nie dam rady przyjść jutro, mam coś ważnego. Szanowni Państwo, uprzejmie informuję, że nie będę mógł uczestniczyć w jutrzejszym spotkaniu z powodu ważnych obowiązków.
Ten telefon się zepsuł, chcę zwrot kasy. Składam reklamację dotyczącą zakupionego telefonu i żądam zwrotu pieniędzy.
Dajcie znać, kiedy to będzie gotowe. Uprzejmie proszę o poinformowanie mnie o terminie realizacji.

Look at what changes in each: ty → Państwo; plain verbs → verbal nouns (poinformowanie, zwrotu, realizacji); colloquial idiom (nie dam rady, kasy) → neutral vocabulary; and the sentences get longer and more subordinated.

A useful drill: take any message you'd actually send a friend, and rewrite it as though to an office. Then reverse it. If you can move a text up and down the ladder on demand, you have the B2 competence the standard is describing.

📌 Where this is assessed

ModuleHow
WritingRegister appropriate to the named text type and the communicative role you were given — one of the 17 listed roles
SpeakingDiscourse management: joining, referring back, controlling and closing the exchange
ReadingRecognising a text's register is often what the comprehension question turns on
Grammatical correctnessSynonimia syntaktyczna — rewriting with z powodu / na skutek / wskutek and similar

This is the least mechanical topic in the B2 standard and the hardest to drill, which is exactly why it separates candidates. Grammar you can learn from a table; register you learn by noticing.
