🎯 Case Government (Rekcja)

Knowing how to form the genitive is not the same as knowing which verbs demand it. At B2 the forms are assumed — this is what's actually being tested.

💡 The distinction that matters

There are two separate skills, and most self-taught learners have only the first:

SkillExample
FormsTurning klucz into kluczadeclension tables
GovernmentKnowing szukać demands that genitiveszukam klucza, never ✗ szukam klucz

The B2 standard calls this rekcja and lists it for every case: which verbs, which prepositions, and with or without a preposition. There is no rule that predicts it — government is a property of each individual verb, learned with the verb, exactly like gender is learned with a noun.

Learn the case with the verb, from the first time you meet it. Not szukać = "to look for", but szukać + dopełniacz = "to look for". Retrofitting government onto hundreds of verbs you already half-know is far more work than attaching it at the start.

dopełniacz Verbs taking the genitive

The largest and most surprising group. Many of these look like they should take a direct object, and in English they do.

VerbMeaningExample

bać sięto be afraid ofboję się ciemności
potrzebowaćto needpotrzebuję pomocy
słuchaćto listen tosłucham muzyki

Używam komputera codziennie.
oo-ZHI-vahm kom-poo-TEH-rah tsoh-DZHEN-nyeh.
I use a computer every day.
To dotyczy nas wszystkich.
toh doh-TI-chi nahs FSHIST-keeh.

celownik Verbs taking the dative

Smaller and more predictable: these are mostly verbs of giving, helping and affecting someone.

VerbMeaningExample
pomagaćto helppomagam bratu
dziękowaćto thankdziękuję ci
wierzyćto believe (someone)wierzę ci
ufaćto trustufam tobie
przeszkadzaćto disturbnie przeszkadzaj mi
podobać sięto be pleasing topodoba mi się
towarzyszyćto accompanytowarzyszy jej
Pomagam bratu.
poh-MAH-gahm BRAH-too.
I'm helping my brother. — ✗ not pomagam brata
Dziękuję ci bardzo.
dzhen-KOO-yeh chee BAR-dzoh.
Thank you very much. — ci is dative, not accusative cię
WierzÄ™ ci.
VYEH-zheh chee.
I believe you. — contrast wierzę w ciebie, "I believe in you"
Nie przeszkadzaj mi.
nyeh pshesh-KAH-dzai mee.
Don't disturb me. — negative imperative, so imperfective
Ten film podoba mi siÄ™.
ten feelm poh-DOH-bah mee sheh.
I like this film. — literally "this film is pleasing to me"; the film is the subject
Podobać się reverses the roles English expects. The thing you like is the grammatical subject and you are in the dative. So the verb agrees with the film: Ten film podoba mi się but Te filmy podobają mi się.

narzędnik Verbs taking the instrumental

A tight, learnable set — mostly reflexive verbs about occupying yourself with something, plus być and zostać with professions and roles.

VerbMeaningExample
interesować sięto be interested ininteresuję się muzyką
zajmować sięto deal with, dozajmuję się sprzedażą
opiekować sięto look afteropiekuję się dzieckiem
byćto be (+ profession/role)jestem nauczycielem
zostaćto becomezostał lekarzem
jechaćto travel (+ vehicle)jadę autobusem
InteresujÄ™ siÄ™ muzykÄ….
een-teh-reh-SOO-yeh sheh moo-ZI-kohm.
I'm interested in music.
Zajmuję się sprzedażą.
zai-MOO-yeh sheh spsheh-DAH-zhohm.
I deal with sales. — the standard way to say what you do for a living
OpiekujÄ™ siÄ™ dzieckiem.
oh-pyeh-KOO-yeh sheh DZHETS-kyem.
I look after a child.

biernik → dopełniacz The negation rule

This one is a rule, and it is absolute: a direct object in the accusative becomes genitive when the verb is negated.

Mam czas. accusative
mahm chahs.
I have time.
Nie mam czasu. genitive
nyeh mahm CHAH-soo.
I don't have time. — czas → czasu
WidzÄ™ ten dom. accusative
VEE-dzeh ten dohm.
I see that house.
Nie widzÄ™ tego domu. genitive
nyeh VEE-dzeh TEH-goh DOH-moo.
I don't see that house. — the demonstrative shifts too: ten → tego
Only the accusative shifts. A verb that already governs the dative or instrumental keeps its case under negation: Nie pomagam bratu (still dative), Nie interesujÄ™ siÄ™ muzykÄ… (still instrumental). And a verb that already takes the genitive simply stays there. The rule is narrower than it first appears.

🧭 Preposition government

Prepositions govern cases too, and several govern different cases depending on meaning.

PrepositionCaseMeaningExample
do, od, z (from), bez, dla, u, obokgenalwaysdo domu, bez cukru
ku, dzięki, przeciwko, wbrewdatalwaysdzięki tobie
przezaccalwaysprzez most
z (with)instraccompanimentz bratem
w, naaccmotion — where toidę na pocztę
w, naloclocation — where atjestem na poczcie
nad, pod, przed, za, międzyinstrstatic positionpod stołem
nad, pod, przed, zaaccmovement to that positionpod stół
olocabout (a topic)o pracy
oaccfor, about (concern, asking)martwiÄ™ siÄ™ o ciebie
Czekam na autobus. acc
CHEH-kahm nah ow-TOH-boos.
I'm waiting for the bus. — czekać na + accusative, fixed
MartwiÄ™ siÄ™ o ciebie. acc
MART-fyeh sheh oh CHEH-byeh.
I'm worried about you.
Rozmawiamy o pracy. loc
roz-mah-VYAH-mi oh PRAH-tsi.
We're talking about work. — same preposition o, different case, different meaning
The o pair above is the clearest demonstration of why government must be learned per verb. Rozmawiać o takes the locative; martwić się o takes the accusative. Nothing about the preposition tells you which — the verb decides.

📌 Why this is worth the effort

Government errors are the most visible kind of mistake at B2, because they occur in almost every sentence you produce. A learner with perfect declension tables who says ✗ szukam klucz sounds less fluent than one with shakier tables who says szukam klucza.

The B2 standard lists case functions split into noun-modifier and verb-modifier roles, with and without prepositions, and names rekcja dopełniaczowa explicitly. In the grammatical-correctness module it usually appears as a gap-fill: the verb is given, the noun is given in the nominative, and you supply the governed form. That is precisely the skill this guide drills.
