🏗️ Word Formation (Słowotwórstwo)
Polish builds new words from old ones with startling regularity. Learn the patterns and your vocabulary multiplies without memorising a single extra word.
💡 Why this is the best-value grammar topic
Most grammar helps you use words you already know. Word formation gives you new words. If you know pisać (to write), the patterns hand you pisanie (writing), pisarz (writer), pisemny (written, adj.) — for free.
The B2 standard lists eight derivation types explicitly. This guide covers each.
1️⃣ Verbal nouns — -nie / -cie
The big one. Almost any Polish verb can become a noun meaning "the act of ___". English uses -ing; Polish uses -nie or -cie, and the result is a normal neuter noun that declines.
czytać → czytanie · pisać → pisanie · palić → palenie
uczyć się → uczenie się · mówić → mówienie
verbs in -ąć / monosyllabic stems → -cie
szyć → szycie · pić → picie · zamknąć → zamknięcie
Aspect survives the transformation, too: czytanie (imperfective, "reading") vs przeczytanie (perfective, "the act of reading through").
2️⃣ People — agent and feminine forms
Agent nouns — who does it
-ciel nauczyć → nauczyciel (teacher) · wychować → wychowawca
-ek / -nik pracować → pracownik (worker) · urząd → urzędnik (official)
Feminine forms
Polish routinely derives a feminine counterpart, usually with -ka. This is standard and expected in contemporary usage.
| Masculine | Feminine | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| nauczyciel | nauczycielka | teacher |
| lekarz | lekarka | doctor |
| student | studentka | student |
| dyrektor | dyrektorka | director |
| król | królowa | king / queen — note -owa, not -ka |
3️⃣ Places — -alnia / -arnia
Where an activity happens. Highly productive and easy to guess once you see the pattern.
| From | Place | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| pływać — to swim | pływalnia | swimming pool |
| książka — book | księgarnia | bookshop |
| kawa — coffee | kawiarnia | café |
| kwiat — flower | kwiaciarnia | florist |
| piekarz — baker | piekarnia | bakery |
| jeść — to eat | jadalnia | dining room |
4️⃣ Adverbs from adjectives
Two patterns, and they are not interchangeable.
po + -u → "in the manner/language of" polski → po polsku · angielski → po angielsku
5️⃣ Adjectives and abstract nouns
Adjectives from prepositional phrases
A preposition plus noun compresses into a single adjective — very common in product and technical language.
| From | Adjective | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| bez alkoholu | bezalkoholowy | non-alcoholic |
| bez pracy | bezrobotny | unemployed |
| bez domu | bezdomny | homeless |
| przy drodze | przydrożny | roadside |
Abstract nouns from adjectives
irregular but common zły → złość (anger) · biały → biel (whiteness) · zielony → zieleń
6️⃣ Comparison — including the irregulars
The B2 standard singles out stopniowanie supletywne — comparatives built from a different root entirely. These are high-frequency and must simply be known.
| Positive | Comparative | Superlative | |
|---|---|---|---|
| dobry — good | lepszy | najlepszy | suppletive |
| zły — bad | gorszy | najgorszy | suppletive |
| duży — big | większy | największy | suppletive |
| mały — small | mniejszy | najmniejszy | suppletive |
| dobrze — well | lepiej | najlepiej | adverb, suppletive |
| źle — badly | gorzej | najgorzej | adverb, suppletive |
| biały — white | bielszy | najbielszy | regular |
| gorzki — bitter | bardziej gorzki | najbardziej gorzki | descriptive |
🧪 Check yourself
| Prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| Verbal noun of gotować, used as subject: "Cooking is fun." | Gotowanie jest przyjemne. |
| "Reading newspapers" — watch the case | czytanie gazet — genitive, not accusative |
| Feminine of tłumacz (translator) | tłumaczka |
| Place where you buy flowers | kwiaciarnia |
| "He speaks German." — not niemiecki | Mówi po niemiecku. |
| Abstract noun from wolny | wolność — freedom |
| Comparative of źle | gorzej — suppletive |
📌 Why the exam cares
Word formation is how you cope with a text containing vocabulary you have never met. Faced with bezrobotność, a learner who knows the patterns decodes it in seconds: bez + robota + -ność — the state of being without work.
It is also what lets you write formally. Palenie jest zabronione is a sign; Nie wolno palić is speech. Being able to nominalise a verb is half of what makes a text read as official Polish — which is exactly the register judgement the B2 standard describes as the step up from B1.
