🎓 Lesson 6
B2 grammar I — aspect, participles and voice. The three systems that separate B1 from B2, each with a contrast table and a word cloud.
1 · Aspekt — dwa czasowniki zamiast jednego
Every Polish verb is either imperfective (a process) or perfective (a completed whole). The pair below is the same meaning, twice.
| Forma / przykład Form / example | Pary aspektowe — prefiks Aspect pairs — prefix |
|---|---|
| robić (ROH-beech) to do (imperfective) | zrobić (ZROH-beech) to do (perfective) |
| pisać (PEE-sahch) to write (imperfective) | napisać (nah-PEE-sahch) to write (perfective) |
| czytać (CHI-tahch) to read (imperfective) | przeczytać (psheh-CHI-tahch) to read (perfective) |
| jeść (yeshch) to eat (imperfective) | zjeść (zyeshch) to eat up (perfective) |
| pić (peech) to drink (imperfective) | wypić (VI-peech) to drink up (perfective) |

2 · Aspekt — jak powstają pary
Not every pair is built by adding a prefix. Here the SHORTER verb is the perfective one, and a suffix makes it imperfective.
| Forma / przykład Form / example | Pary aspektowe — sufiks i supletywizm Aspect pairs — suffix and suppletion |
|---|---|
| kupować (koo-POH-vahch) to buy (imperfective) | kupić (KOO-peech) to buy (perfective) |
| dawać (DAH-vahch) to give (imperfective) | dać (dahch) to give (perfective) |
| otwierać (ot-FYEH-rahch) to open (imperfective) | otworzyć (ot-FOH-zhich) to open (perfective) |
| wracać (VRAH-tsahch) to return (imperfective) | wrócić (VROO-cheech) to return (perfective) |
| brać (brahch) to take (imperfective) | wziąć (vzhonch) to take (perfective) |

3 · Aspekt a czas
A perfective verb has NO present tense. Its present-looking forms carry future meaning — the single most common B2 error.
| Forma / przykład Form / example | Formy czasowe obu aspektów Tense forms of both aspects |
|---|---|
| piszę (PEE-sheh) — teraz | napiszę (nah-PEE-sheh) — w przyszłości napiszę — in the future |

| będę pisać (BEN-deh PEE-sahch) — przyszły złożony | napiszę (nah-PEE-sheh) — przyszły prosty napiszę — simple future |

Learning Strategy
Aspect is not a tense and cannot be learned as one. Every time you meet a new verb, learn its partner at the same time — robić/zrobić as one unit, the way you learn a noun with its gender.
Participles are what make written Polish compress. A relative clause is never wrong, but a formal text built entirely from który reads as B1. Start noticing them in the reading passages, then use them.
